Thank you to MIke for writing this for us! Kudos on your amazing progress!
I love CrossFit and in particular my CrossFit teammates at CrossFit Webster. It has been about a year since I became affiliated with CFW. Every so often I go through my progress record and while I expect to get faster and stronger as I go, occasionally I surprise even myself.
The latest surprise was when part of the workout consisted of 7 sets of 3 reps of my current 70% 1RM bench press. When I compared my 1RM bench press of about a year ago I discovered it was equal to that day’s 70% RX!
At 65 years old, I am doing things I would have struggled to do in my 40s. I often have to scale my workouts due to some mobility issue or inability to perform a particular requirement at the moment (like rope climbs or muscle ups) but frequently I am able to complete the WOD at the Master’s RX level. I am never the fastest to get it done but I am often not the last either.
In any case, I am not doing this to get ready for the Games or to show up anyone. Functional fitness, friendship and camaraderie are what keep me coming back for more. My physician is astounded by the progress I have made in weight control, improvement of my blood pressure and overall strength. Every time I show up at the box, I am greeted by everyone and with a desire to do better than I did last time. It is a different kind of competitiveness -- we all want to individually do well but we celebrate each other’s successes as if they are our own.
I can hardly wait to see what surprise I stumble onto next but until then, I want to thank Laura, Jeff and the rest of the staff and my CrossFit cohorts for the outstanding support. I plan to be doing CrossFit for many years to come.
